“We are proud to make a difference in the lives of others.” ‘The Tree of Life’ Tour was specifically cultivated for women to take a journey from their head to their heart. This tour was led by local entrepreneur Ali Villani and Katrina Webb, Para-Olympian from Adelaide. Ali tells us more. “We took two groups of about 10 women, back to back, in October to Nepal. Our aim is for the women to learn leadership skills through helping others by using their time, their talent and their treasure.

“The trips are 8 days and technologies are put away so the women learn to be in the present moment. A lot of reflection takes place as we talk extensively about what we’ve seen and felt for the day.

“Initially we learn about the culture, Buddhism and Hinduism and visit temples. Then there was a leadership day involving us and Nepalese entrepreneurs. It is based on the book ‘Ali the Shiny Sparkly Unicorn.’ We talk about the issues that we are facing and find they are the same for both cultures. Dr Tshering Lama spoke and we create a way to continue supporting each other.

“Without Reclink, I probably wouldn’t have stayed in treatment and quite possibly might not be around today,” states Rhan Harris. He’s the Sports Coordinator for the Geelong office of Reclink Australia, and has first-hand experience of the life-changing impact the organisation’s activities can have on disadvantaged members of the community.

“Reclink run activities every weekday for clients of welfare groups such as drug and alcohol rehab services, police groups and crisis accommodation centres. The organisation started on the streets of St Kilda as an outreach recreation program for Sacred Heart clients. A very small football kick-to-kick grew into a team which grew into a league which spread around Australia. As it grew it started to encompass other programs such as cricket, passive activities like tai chi and the arts, and now has around 100,000 diverse participation opportunities each year.

Harm occurring from gambling is a big public health issue in our Geelong community. Current research demonstrates that just over $118 million was spent in the 2017/18 financial year in the Geelong region alone, and this has been expected to increase in this financial year.

Are you creative, passionate, motivated, retired or close to it? Geelong Seniorpreneurs is a must. Meet a group of like-minded people who are coming together to connect, network, problem solve and inspire. Founder, Bernard Kelly, who is a serial entrepreneur and author of ‘Exciting, Dynamic, Geelong!’ believes there are many baby boomers out there, who aren’t ready for retirement, who should tap in to this resource. Becoming a senior entrepreneur is a way of stimulating one’s creativity while generating a handy cash flow.

The group met for the first time on that sizzling Friday in January. The meeting format was well structured with something for everyone. There were introductions and sharing. Geelong Seniorpreneurs adopts the proven Action Learning format when members speak to the issues they are facing, and other members offer solutions. The first guest speaker was video whizz, Zoe Hollingsworth of Zebrafish Digital. Her topic was how to ‘Create Simple Video Clips to Enhance Your Marketing’. There was a sharing of resources and individuals are encouraged to team up as Mentor/Mentees. I came away with lots of great ideas and feeling very inspired.

What can you do to make a difference to the safety of your loved ones, colleagues and our community? Lifeline Geelong are committed to equipping members of the community with the skills and knowledge to support each other when in crisis. Their vision is for people to keep each other safe from the harm and death that can be caused by suicide, mental illness and domestic & family violence. Every day in Australia, 8 women are hospitalised with critical injuries inflicted by an intimate partner and more than 1 woman is killed as a result of domestic violence.

In 2017, more than 3,000 Australians died by suicide and a further 65,000 attempted suicide. Lifeline Geelong believe that these deaths can be prevented with early recognition and response, and that everyone should therefore be trained in recognizing the signs that a person may be experiencing thoughts of suicide.

The Geelong Rainbow Festival is back for its second year and it’s going to be even bigger than last year. All events during the festival, February 8-10^th, are inclusive and open for all to attend. Geelong Rainbow Inc. are especially excited to invite everyone to the Geelong Rainbow Pride March and Fair Day on the Sunday. The day will commence with a march through Geelong’s CBD at 11.30 and conclude at Johnstone Park for a day of free entertainment and community fun the whole family will enjoy.

Geelong Rainbow Inc. now in only its third year of operation, were delighted by the crowds in the inaugural festival in 2018 with all ticketed events selling out and the free centrepiece event Fair Day attracting more than 1,000 people.

“I love being at the event overnight – it is quiet and a little darker with the overhead lights around the oval…I love watching people of all ages walking the track at 3, 4, and 5am and into sunrise – I love the look on their faces of peace and contentment. They should be tired and looking forward to a sleep – but no – they are walking the track with a family member, a friend, chatting to each other or by themselves.  They are walking for their Mum or Dad, sister or brother; for their best mate or a work mate. Or for someone they don’t know that well.”
