We embrace diversity.  What does diversity really mean, here’s how our friends at Deakin define it “Diversity: differences between individuals or groups of people in age, cultural background, disability, ethnicity, family responsibilities, gender, language, marital status, religious belief, political belief, sexual orientation and socio-economic background.”

Humans in Geelong celebrates diversity in a positive, safe and nurturing environment.

Humans in Geelong is apolitical – not connected to any political interest.

Stampsy

Stampsy greeted me with a hug, she gets it. Meet Leanne Stamps, the bubbly, personable Krock presenter with the infectious smile and easy-going style at the Humans in Geelong Expo 2018. Stampsy feels extremely grateful and blessed to be living in Armstrong Creek and working at Krock. “The Geelong region is amazing, there are so many opportunities here.

Stampsy to use!

“I’ve lived in 4 different States and have worked at 7 radio stations and I’m so appreciative to have finally found somewhere I can call home. Krock and Geelong is the first work place where I’ve felt genuine compassion, support and collaboration. My four years here has just flown. I’ve received so many opportunities to grow and I’ve seen a massive shift in Geelong in that time. I arrived when the manufacturing industries were closing and I’ve witnessed resilience and immense growth in small business, creativity and opportunities.

Youth Discussion Panel, Kuranda

Geelong is a fast-growing dynamic city.  Its rapidly changing to meet immigration outlooks and there have been influxes of Asian and African migrants along with refugee communities in the past decade.  How has this impacted on Geelong?  But irrespective of culture, identity or religion, young people make up the future and their ideas, their passions and ambitions are relevant to a vibrant and cohesive Geelong.

Youth Panel (1)

This panel will discuss many of the achievements, passions and goals of five young people living in Geelong along with their insights about the challenges facing multicultural youth, the role of the more settled community and issues around identity and marginalization.

This will be an interactive session with plenty of time for questions and answers.

Come along and challenge these five young leaders and be pleasantly surprised by their wisdom and insights. 3pm Sun 7 Oct Deakin Waterfront in the Lecture Theatre. Humans in Geelong Expo 2018 is a free community event.

Princess Aspien, Chloe

Princess Aspien will be gracing the Humans in Geelong Expo October 7th with her unique fairy tale presence and she’s bringing her friend Spiderman along.

Chloe Hayden is the person behind the Princess, an inspirationally creative children’s entertainer who proudly celebrates the fact that she has Asperger’s Syndrome.  Through song, dance and storytelling, she aims to give a positive voice to young people on the Autism Spectrum.

Princess Aspien 2

“I’m so, so passionate about helping children on the spectrum, and teaching them that they can be anything that they want to be, that they’re so much more than what a label tells them. I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 12. I knew I was different and it made me scared and anxious. From 18 I realised that it’s ok to be different and I embraced it, but I’d gone through a lot first. This made me realise I wanted to advocate for those with autism and help them so they don’t go through the same battles that I did.”

Tony McManus, Beyondblue & RUOK?

“The best exercise that you can do is to help someone else who is down, to get up”.  Tony McManus, beyondblue Ambassador, never forgot this much needed advice from personal trainer Steve Lewry.

“That phrase is now a guiding principle for my current focus on overcoming the Mental Health issue of Isolation with the solution of Social Connection through volunteering and mentoring. It can actually be a very simple and positive philosophy to help build connections and resilience in communities.”

Tony is one of the many inspiring people speaking at the Humans in Geelong Expo next week.  He shares his story with the intention of encouraging people with depression and anxiety to seek help.

Cookie Moo, Rachael

It’s not okay. After we rescued and gave a home to our beautiful Ruby (Cookie Moo), I knew I had to make a difference. Seeing photos and hearing many statements about various puppy farms, it’s one of the times in my life I’ve felt the most downhearted and useless because all I thought about was all of the dogs living there, receiving no love, no attention, no care. It was absolutely horrifying.

Cookie Moo

I’m Rachael and my small biz, Cookie Moo Bath, Body & Home started back in 2014 from our home in Geelong. Originally, I began just to assist Kaya’s Mission in raising much needed funds so they could continue to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home puppy farm dogs. But it was also something that my heart was so drawn towards doing, as a result of us rescuing our beautiful dog Ruby (Cookie Moo) and Minnie Woo.

Liam’s Art Geelong

“Seriously, no stupid people allowed beyond this point!” This was the warning that Phil and I encountered when we arrived for our interview with Liam O’Neil. It looked like we might have to conduct the interview on the front lawn, but fortunately Liam and his mother Ailsa were gracious enough to let us inside.

What we found when we entered was a celebration of art which covered every inch of the space. Cheerfully coloured canvases, bedazzled mannequins and two bright, friendly smiles lit up the suburban home which houses Liam’s studio. At the time of our visit, Liam was working on a portrait of a woman holding a camera in graphic yellow and purples. As Phil and Ailsa discussed the best location for our photo shoot, I chatted with Liam about his favourite shows such as Doctor Who and Thomas the Tank Engine.
